If you were on Van Giesen stuck in standstill traffic on Tuesday, wondering what on earth has traffic stopped, chances are it could have been my crazy daughter, making a very dramatic rescue. My daughter, Kamrace was on her way to work, running late (like mother, like daughter) when she came across five baby ducks. They were scattered in the road, usually ducks will literally stay in a row when things are normal. But sadly this wasn't normal, Mama duck was nowhere to be found and the babies were lost and scared.

Unfortunately the car just before Kamrace didn't see the babies and went over the top of them, killing two of them. Frantic and crying Kamrace pulled over and ran into the road, stopping traffic. Crying and yelling at traffic she was able to wrangle up the three frightened feathered babies. Looking through her car she found her Papa's lunch box in the trunk of the car, she secured them and went to search for mama duck, to no avail.

That is when I got the call at work, "Mom, I need duck food!" All I could think was, here we go again! Two years ago, about the same time, she rescued two little girl duckies, who she nurtured and I eventually took them into my farm life and raised them until they flew off.

We got the babies set up in warm blankets wrapped in hand warmers and set up their food and water station. Knowing neither of us had the time or means to raise three ducks this year Kamrace called Blue Mountain Wildlife, founded by Lynn and Bob Tompkins back in 1990. Blue Mountain Wildlife is a premier wildlife rehabilitation facility in eastern Oregon that serves most of Eastern Oregon and South-Eastern Washington from two facilities.

Many times baby ducks have been spotted alone with no mom in sight, but they don't recommend "rescuing" them, it might end up being kidnapping. Momma ducks are usually just out of sight! When you see baby ducks in a row, it means mom is not far and they are just catching up. This happened to be a rescue situation however and Momma was never found. The babies are now happy and safe at Blue Mountain Wildlife, where they will live until they are healthy and grown enough to be let back into the wildlife.
