Detailed Info >> Nurses At Your Service: A Century of Caring developed by the Washington State History Museum in partnership with the Washington State Nursing Centennial Consortium comprises panels with wonderful graphics and historical narratives on nursing throughout the last century from pioneering times to present day. In addition to these panels, mannequins portray nurses (one wearing a beautiful cape loaned by Lourdes Health Network), a doctor, and patients (one on a decontamination gurney donated by Kadlec Regional Medical Center). Visitors may receive free doctors and nurses hats also donated by Lourdes. Inside the same location is a replica of a fall-out shelter that includes items received from Smithsonian Institute and also from the Bonneville Power Administration Midway Substation. Midway Representatives informed CREHST that back in the 1960's the small community at Midway had a fall-out shelter installed in the underground tunnel that runs below the substation and road area. This would have served during the cold war era as a sanctuary for residents and workers at Midway. The contents of the fall-out shelter included Civil Defense items such as survival biscuits and carbohydrate supplements. The shelter also had medical supplies and sanitation equipment including a Green Metal Drinking Water container, which doubled as the toilet facility (a plastic toilet seat is mounted on the can). There are two sanitation kits, with purification tablets, sanitizing tablets, and 10 rolls of Scots toilet paper with a note stating that they were for 50 people and to use them sparingly. These items are part of the Department of Energy's Hanford Collection which encompasses the Manhattan Project and Cold War ERA. To supplement the items from Midway, CREHST received a donation from the Smithsonian Institute of two large boxes of medical supplies, which would have been used for community fall-out shelters. Museum Hours: Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m. - 5 .pm., Sundays: 12 - 5 p.m. Admission: $4 Adults, $3 Students (7-17) & Seniors.

Detailed Info >> Honoring Our Veterans exhibit will be on display in the Temporary Gallery and focuses on the world wars and major eras of U.S. military engagement, chronicling the history of Indian scouts up through Operation Iraqi Freedom. The exhibit will profile certain troops within those eras such as the 41st Division also called the Sunshine Division of the Oregon National Guard and will single out individuals who participated in particular conflicts, elaborating on their military experiences. American Indians have historically represented a disproportionately high induction in the armed forces. Whereas American Indians comprise less than one percent of the U.S. population, they make up almost two percent of the armed forces, more than any other ethnicity. The reasons for the willingness of American Indians to join military forces are complex and deeply rooted in tribal history and cultural values, as well as the historic dearth of opportunity on most Indian reservations. Tamástslikt Cultural Institute is also honored to host the American Veterans Traveling Tribute (AVTT), a 3-day display of a nearly life-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, on its grounds, October 20-23, 2011. The traveling tribute will be installed as an outdoor exhibit at Tamástslikt and will be open to the public free of charge. The American Veterans Traveling Tribute is owned and operated by a veterans organization based in Colorado http://www.avtt.org. Schedule: October 20. The Traveling Wall is open from noon - 10 p.m., October 21-22, open from 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. each day, October 23, closing day, the tribute will be open from 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.
