A coach who was popular with players, and appeared to be bringing the school out of it's humdrums in football is out, and players are not happy.

We're pretty sure there's a lot to the story that has not been revealed, but Southridge Head Football Coach Keith Munson has left the program, according to the Tri-City Herald.

It's not over his coaching apparently, but reportedly evaluations of his academic performance. Munson, who played at Montana Tech, and has several decades of coaching and education experience, did not have his teaching contract renewed, according to sources. His evaluations were apparently good, until April 28th, reports the Herald. Then things changed. Munson said the $8,800 coaching salary is not enough to live on, after losing the $65,000 he made for teaching biology and weight training classes.

Before Munson arrived, Southridge had gradually slid downwards in performance, going a combined 7-13 in 2014 and 2015, and losing badly to their crosstown rivals Kamiakin and Kennewick. The school had not gone to the playoffs since 2011.

Munson led the Suns to a 7-5 record, their first playoff berth in six years, and their first playoff win in over a decade. They beat GSL 3A champ Mt. Spokane and won an upset game over favored Juanita before being knocked out in the round round of 16 playoff bracket. Crosstown rival Kamiakin would go on to win the 3A State Title.

Numerous players picketed and displayed signs at various locations showing support, and others said Munson brought in some much-needed order, discipline and vision to the program. They were considered a surprise last year, a significantly improved team.

The school district says work will begin immediately on a successor. Under WIAA rules, MCC teams began spring football workouts this week.
