Seattle Man Ticketed for Warning Drivers of Speed Trap
Daniel Gehlke said he'll fight the $138 ticket he received from Seattle police after holding a sign warning motorists of an upcoming speed trap.
The sign read "Cops Ahead - Stop at Sign and Lights." It was made from the lid of a plastic tub upon which he wrote his message with a black Sharpie.
He said the trap was an injustice and he just wanted to warn people.
The ticket was for a holding an unauthorized sign attempting to control traffic. The law is designed to prevent confusion, Seattle police said.
Because his sign was obviously home-made, Gehlke thinks he has a case in court. But the law says non-city signs may not communicate messages "likely to be construed as giving warning to or regulating traffic."
