First Kodak, and now another American legend files for bankruptcy.  According to the Wall Street Journal if the Hostess Company and Unions can’t come to a compromise those cream filled Twinkies and other delicious products could be a thing of the past. Hostess, an 82-year-old company plans to continue to operate while restructuring.  Read the full story from the Wall Street Journal.

Twinkies were invented in 1930 during the Great Depression by James A. Dewar, a plant manager for Hostess. Twinkie Fun Facts and a complete history are available from Netorama.com.

My mother never allowed us to eat Twinkies on a regular basis and looking at our childhood obesity epidemic in America today I’m grateful she monitored our Twinkie intake.  We were only allowed to eat Twinkies on special occasions like after a baseball game or on Easter. Even now I only indulge on special occasions. I rarely walk into a store looking for the devil — I do believe they are the devil in disguise.

A few years ago while on vacation in Seaside Oregon I tried deep-fried Twinkies covered in chocolate sauce. I couldn’t finish it – it was too rich! I had to call in my teenage boys for backup — they had no problem finishing it off.

Who comes up with these ideas?  Deep-fried Twinkies?  I’m sure there are other ways to eat Twinkies.  Please share and maybe we’ll help “bail out” this American classic.
