I grew up in Butte, MT with the Pastie (pass-tee) at our dinner table. It's basically a meat and potato pie recipe that Welsh miner's wives brought to the area in the early days. They were perfect for miners because they could be baked in advance then eaten cold the next day and conveniently hand held.

Eventually, pastie shops opened in Butte and nearby Anaconda, MT and continue to be a favorite of locals. Nobody eats a full size pastie by hand these days. They're served on a plate, smothered in brown gravy. Some folks just like their pastie with ketchup.

We get our pasties, made in Anaconda, MT at Yolk's Fresh Market in the frozen section! Make some brown gravy, get the ketchup out and you're in for a treat!

Now that you know the history of this awesome creation and where to get them close to home, watch this Travel Channel segment on Montana pasties and watch the deliciousness in action!
