Chiawana Takes on Camas in 4A State Title Football Game Saturday – Game on ROOT Sports

Chiawana looking for 4A title

For a school that opened less than five years ago, Chiawana is doing well!

The Riverhawks, who began playing full-strength varsity football in 2010, are in search of their first state football crown when they take on the Camas Papermakers in the Tacoma Dome Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Chiawana, led by former Pasco coach Steve Graff, went 12-1 this season, with their only loss coming in October to the Lake City, Idaho Timberwolves 33-26 on the road. Aside from a 12-point win over rival Kamiakin, the Riverhawks closest margin of victory this year in league was 35 points.

Chiawana is taking on the Camas Papermakers — No. 1 in the WIAA 4A rankings — which are ranked 31st in the nation. Chiawana is ranked No. 3 in the state, and 71st in MaxPreps.

Camas is located less than 30 miles west of Vancouver, Washington, right along the Columbia River. The Papermakers have come close before, losing in 3A semis a few years ago, then in 4A the last couple of years.

Chiawana has a very good chance against Camas, as they are perhaps the most balanced team in the 4A playoffs. During the regular season they passed and rushed for well over 2,000 yards in each category. They have some serious speed at the receiver positions, and a stingy defense. They completely shut down Federal Way 40-7 in the 4A semi-final, and their previous playoff opponents have largely been one-dimensional.  Camas likes to throw the ball, and is not as even as Chiawana.

The Mid Columbia’s hopes for a football title will rest on the Riverhawks, as Richland battled hard but lost a close game to Federal Way in the quarterfinals, and Kamiakin went to the semi-finals in 3A but came up short.

Tune to ROOT SPORTS Saturday at 7:30 to watch the 4A title game. Here’s hoping the Riverhawks bring home some hardware to the Mid-Columbia Conference! The folks on the West Side think they play the best high school football, but we think Chiawana will show them otherwise and that the Columbia Basin has some pretty good talent too!
