Richland Police's street crimes unit located a suspected car thief in the 300 block of Van Giesen Street a little after 2 p.m. Wednesday and he gave chase in a stolen Kia Sorento with stolen license plates. When driver Brian Buell, 45, tried to turn around near George Washington Way and Symons Street, he spun out and slammed into the Jefferson Park gazebo. Pursuing officers pinned him to the gazebo, but he attempted to ram himself free doing significant damage to the gazebo's exterior.

Sgt. Brian Ruegsegger said Buell is suspected of stealing the Sorento off a Kennewick car lot on Oct. 20. The vehicle had no plates, so he allegedly stole plates off another vehicle to place on the Sorento. He was already wanted for several warrants prior to the suspected car theft.
