This weekend the state of Washington increased the taxes on gasoline by 7 cents per gallon. And next summer they're going up another 5 cents per gallon!

Earlier this summer a spending package was approved by the state legislator and signed by Governor Inslee that allows another 16 billion dollars to be spent on transportation and road needs.

Some of the extra money will be used for state wide road construction and maintenance as well as for non-road stuff like bike paths. Another portion will help out Seattle's transit system (thanks Seattle).

The end result is that Washington has the second highest gas taxes in the nation, second only to Pennsylvania. We also have one of the highest nation gas price averages, $3.18 per gallon, as compared to the nationwide average of $2.67.

So if you see gas prices continue to rise, this is a good portion of why.
