I lived in Alaska for a little while and got to see the northern lights or aurora borealis just once but it was something I'll never forget! For the lights to appear, all you need is a geomagnetic storm and some solar wind to make the protons glow (or something like that-ha!). Every now and then, conditions are right for folks in the lower 48 to see the lights, and this particular event is especially good for watching just about anywhere in Washington State. Best viewing times will be late tonight (Fri 3/22), into tomorrow morning, early.
