On Saturday over 600 crazy people got together to raise money for Special Olympics of Washington State with the annual 'Freezin For a Reason' Polar Plunge in Columbia Park.

102.7 KORD, the Kennewick Police Department and Gold's Gym joined forces to host the very first “Run From the Cops 5K Midnight Run” to benefit Special Olympics of Washington.

It was a cold and windy day Saturday making the 2012 Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Washington challenging to say the least. Still, nearly 700 people turned out to take the plunge into the 36-degree water of the Columbia River -- some in bikinis and others in wild costumes...

A couple of weeks ago I walked into the KORD studio and Chuck & Greg asked me if I was willing to take the Polar Plunge on January 21st. I said "Well that would be crazy" Then I saw how many people are actually jumping into the Columbia River and it's all for Special Olympics Of Washington. I then had a change of heart and said "YOU'RE ON"!

On January 21st hundreds from around the area will take the plunge! Polar Plunge is a fun way to support local Special Olympics athletes.  All you have to do is sign up and have your friends, relatives, and co-workers sponsor you!  Dress up as a character or just go in your swim suit.

Worldwide, the Special Olympics sees participation from more than 3.1 million athletes with intellectual disabilities in 175 countries. Special Olympics began in 1968 in Chicago and were organized by P.E. teacher Anne McGlone Burke. Eunice Kennedy Shriver (JFK’s sister and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s ex-mother-in-law) agreed to sponsor the event and also announced she would permanently fund the Specia
