Cooking And Freezing Won’t Make Hood Canal Shellfish Safe Right Now

The Washington State Department of Health is warning residents and visitors to steer clear of recreational shellfish harvesting in Hood Canal.

Recreational Shellfish harvesting is CLOSED after laboratory testing detected lethal levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning toxin in samples collected earlier this week.

Closure Affects Hood Canal From Foulweather Bluff and Port Ludlow Bay South

The closure applies to clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, and other molluscan shellfish species. Crab and shrimp are not included. Mason, Kitsap, and Jefferson County authorities have posted warning signs at public beaches throughout the affected areas

Shellfish harvesting remains closed in Port Gamble Bay, Quilcene Bay, Dabob Bay, and Mats Mats Bay. The closure is expanded to Port Townshend, Oak Bay, and Marrostone Island.

Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning Is Virtually Undetectable

Whle symptoms can develop within minutes to several hours after consuming contaminated shellfish, the marine toxin cannot be detected by sight, smell, or taste. Furthermore, the toxin can't be destroyed by cooking, freezing, or cleaning shellfish.

What Are Symptoms of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning?

Symptoms may include tingling or numbness of the lips, tongue, hands, and feet. Severe cases may cause breathing difficulty, paralysis, or even DEATH.

Anyone who experiences symptoms after eating shellfish should seek medical care immediately or call 911.

The Washington State Department of Health advises the public to check the Shellfish Safety Map before harvesting recreational shellfish. Affected areas will remain closed until toxin levels return to safe levels.
