Throwback Thursday: The Health Spa That Killed Its Patients
About 100 years ago there was a sanitarium -- a type of health spa for people with minor mental health issues -- in Olalla, Washington, that used fasting as a way to fix people's health.
The patients who went to the sanitarium would stay in a tiny attic for days on end with no food.
Modern theories believe starving the patients was a way for the patients to submit to the owner's will.
The owner of the sanitarium would rob the people of their jewelry and other valuables as soon as they died. The owner would then perform a bathtub autopsy on their emaciated bodies.
Do you know Ivar Haglund of Seattle's IVAR'S restaurant fame? His mother died in this sanitarium along with 40 other people.
Even after 100 years this sanitarium still causes chills to the people of Washington.
