Oregon State Considers Punishing Politicians for Lying
A new measure floating around in the Oregon State legislature is trying to make it so politicians cannot lie on their statements in the voter pamphlets.
It is already illegal for candidates to lie about educational or professional background, but now any form of false advertising in the statements could spark legal consequences.
Republican Representative Julie Parrish thinks that the lack of penalties for lying in the voter pamphlets is allowing many politicians to swindle voters.
However, House Republican leader Mike McLane believes that public scrutiny is enough of a consequence for that kind of behavior and actual legal punishment is unnecessary.
So far the ACLU has claimed the bill to be "likely unconstitutional."
