11 Years Ago: Lady A Earn Double-Platinum Single for ‘Need You Now’
Eleven years ago today, on Feb. 18, 2010, Lady A (then known as Lady Antebellum) earned a double-platinum certification, for sales of 2 million copies, for their single "Need You Now." The song was the title track of and debut single from their sophomore album, and it catapulted the country trio to superstar status.
"Need You Now," written by Lady A members Hillary Scott, Charles Kelley and Dave Haywood, along with Josh Kear, spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. It also appeared on several other charts, including in the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Adult Contemporary and Adult Top 40 charts.
"Everybody brought in a little piece of that song after I started playing some of the basic chords," Kelley recalls to The Boot of writing "Need You Now." "But I’m not that great of a guitar player, so I put the guitar back in Dave’s hands. And with his expert knowledge, he just took it to the next level. That’s the beautiful thing about co-writing. I had that little piece of melody, but I told Hillary it would probably be a more beautiful melody if she sang it."
"Need You Now" was released on Aug. 24, 2009; by December of that year, it had earned its first platinum certification. To date, "Need You Now" has sold more than 6 million copies. The hit single also filled up Lady A's trophy case: It won numerous awards, including four Grammys, a CMA, two ACM Awards and the BMI Pop Award, among others.
