The Renton Police Department recently introduced its new De-Drone Trailer, a mobile monitoring system designed to help officers track drone activity around major events and restricted airspace.

How the New De-Drone Trailer System Works

The trailer has already drawn attention online, with some calling it a "drone tower." Whatever the nickname, its purpose is straightforward: identify drones flying where they shouldn't be and help keep the public safe.

The Renton Police recently released a video explaining how the De-Drone Trailer monitors restricted airspace in real time. If an unauthorized drone enters the area, the system alerts officers, receives the drone's Remote ID information, and can even help pinpoint the location of the person operating it.

The technology does not force drones to land or take control of them. Instead, it gives officers information they can use to contact pilots and ensure they are following federal regulations.

During the FIFA World Cup, temporary flight restrictions will be in place within a one-mile radius of both The Landing and the Sounds FC Center at Longacres.

The Main Purpose of the De-Drone Tower is Not to Stop Attacks

According to Sgt. Nick Sangder, many recreational drone pilots just aren't aware of the restrictions near the Renton Municipal Airport or the temporary air restriction rules with large events.

The goal, he says, is to help pilots understand where they can legally fly while preventing situations that could create safety concerns for thousands of visitors.
