5 Popular Things to Do in WA’s Oldest Town: Steilacoom
THE OLDEST TOWN IN WASHINGTON STATE
When Washington state was first colonized, settlers stuck their claims into Steilacoom. They built Washington’s first jail, public library, school, and even the first church. More importantly (to me) they built the first Washington brewery. That was back in 1854, and some two centuries later, Steilacoom has become a bustling small town filled with fun things to do. If you’ve never ventured out that way, let’s look at some of the most popular things that tourists like to do in Washington’s oldest town.
WHERE IS STEILACOOM?
Steilacoom is about an hour away from Seattle (on a good day with no major traffic). It’s located in Pierce County and is home to less than 7,000 residents. It’s right on the coast of the Puget Sound, and you can see several Washington state islands in the distance from the shore. What a lovely sight!
HOW MUCH IS A HOME IN STEILACOOM?
The cost of living in Steilacoom can be rather high, although not as steep as it is to live in Seattle. The price of a buying a home for sale here ranges between the $400,000 range all the way up to homes in the millions.
Steilacoom has a pioneer-themed Fourth of July celebration. Residents and visitors enjoy attending the Steilacoom annual kite festival and planned movies in the park events during the month of August, plus other fun popular annual events like the Easter Egg Hunt in April, and the Apple Squeeze event and Haunted House during October.
Visitors also love to come to Steilacoom for the golfing, birdwatching, kayak, and paddle boarding.
