Superintendent of public schools is a pretty sweet job. It's a lot of responsibility, but it'd also be a lot of fun. So why is the Hermiston School District Superintendent Fred Maiocco leaving? Because he's a hero.

Maiocco was called up by the Army Reserves. He's a Brigadier General and is needed for 15-18 months in Europe.

He'll command the 7th Mission Support Command supporting troops in Africa, the Middle East, and Europe of course.

He served in Kuwait for 18 months back in 2011. The school board approved his leave of absence, which I think means someone else will take his job but he can have it back in 2019.
