Here’s Why ‘Dolly’ Was a Misfit Toy
In the classic Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer claymation TV special, you'll remember that they landed on the Island of Misfit Toys. The Jack-in-the-box was named Charlie, the toy train had square wheels on his caboose, the elephant was polka dot spotted, the water pistol only shot jelly and so on. But what was wrong with Dolly? Why was she a misfit toy?
I don't think anyone knew the answer for several decades. These days the answer is all over the internet if you search for it, and I have to tell you that I never would've guessed it. One of the show's producers was asked this question during an interview about 15 years ago, and it turns out that Dolly was forgotten by the little girl that own her so she has self-esteem issues. She was brought to the Island of Misfit Toys where she would always be loved.
HOWEVER...I found one article that points out that the reason she's a misfit is because she doesn't have nose!
So I'm betting that's the actual reason and the self-esteem comment may have been said in jest.
