There's a lot to like about Goldendale, Washington and nearby Maryhill... but now there's one-less thing to like and they're really upset about it.

The Goldendale Observatory State Park is definitely worth the drive. Kids love it, old people love it... everybody loves it. They even have a new telescope!

But the International Dark-Sky Association recently de-listed Goldendale off its list of "Dark Sky Parks" best for observing the stars because of too much light pollution.
That's partly because Goldendale is growing, but one could also blame the city and county codes for not safeguarding against that. The park administrator said it was a hot-button political issue. The International Dark-Sky Association said it is happy to review the park's status at a later date if the situation improves.
