Mac’s Garden Center is a retail nursery located in Pasco. Recently during a visit  I noticed something moving in one of the hanging plants suspended about 6 feet above. After some fine detective work which included reading a sign that said “Not for sale, mother duck nesting” I was able to “quack” the case.

It was hot yesterday and that reminded me to find my swimsuit. Swimwear is a funny thing because has got to be the most personal thing we wear all year. As problematic as that is, we also love for our things to be personal, or rather extensions of our personality. When my wife can’t find something she really likes, she makes her own.  That got me thinking, if women can’t find a bathing suit they like, can they make their own? I discovered on YouTube that many have. Some even recycle old clothing like T-shirts and leggings! I’d be wary of using a T-shirt, however, since “wet T-shirt” is not a phrase usually used to market bathing suits. And sorry to be a wet blanket, but one of the DIY experts I found discouraged people from using old towels. It seems like an obvious choice, but apparently wearing a wet towel for hours is not at all comfortable. It also becomes heavy and sags. Check out these five creative and innovative ideas for making your own swimsuit:

Tamisha Glashen is not the best public speaker, but she’s easy to follow and has great ideas.

Here’s Tamisha again; similar style, but this one is a REALLY cool idea. She takes shiny leggings she doesn’t want anymore and uses the already-sewn portions to cut the sewing time in half! Leggings sometimes come in colors that go out of style, but anything goes as swimwear, right?

Here’s Tamisha AGAIN (come on, she’s got good ideas). In this one she tells you how to get a swimsuit pattern that will perfectly fit you without having to buy a real sewing pattern.

OK, here’s someone new. It’s all visual and the seamstress is moving a little too fast for my liking, but you get the idea. The music makes me feel like I’m at a weird European rave for DIY sewing fans. And the finished product does not appear to fit all that comfortably, but the end result is a more traditional bikini than what Tamisha was doing.

Here’s the T-shirt one. I think it’s very clever.

I was out at the TRAC on Tuesday attending the Hanford Health and Safety Expo, it was early and I saw the KORD waking crew setting up. As I approached, all I saw was Chuck doing all the work, setting up the tent, hooking up the sound system, and hanging up KORD banner. When I did see Greg, he was sitting in the truck shining his head, trimming his mustache, and yelling orders at his assistant, who I was told is in the country illegally from Tansanesia, or was it Cleveland? Poor Chuck was wore out before the remote even started. In the half hour I watched the two KORD guys, Chuck waxed the KORD Ford, shined up the wheels, replaced a head light, and still did all of his radio chores. Greg just yelled because his assistant for not buying the seedless grapes, horrible, horrible man. As he laid in the grass, he would try and convince all the women that walked by just how sexy he was, and that he was brewing up his own cologne at home in his back yard, it was sad. The one women that did stop to chat with him, turned out to be his parole officer. Get off the Grass Greg, and look around, you have a good partner to work with, but you’re screwing it all up with your Ryan Seacrest attitude. I hope you got grass stains on your imported Italian jeans. Have a good day, Chuck.

Every week we’re going to ask about your memories or favorite thing about one of the small towns in the Mid-Columbia.

These are places that listen to us but don’t get a lot of attention from us. You know who you are: Benton City, Burbank, Othello, Prosser, Walla Walla (not that small, but you get the idea) and others.

We all associate a place with landmarks, people, smells, landscape and other identifying factors. For me, the Blue Bridge, Rattlesnake Mountain, Spudnuts Donuts, Columbia Center Mall, black basalt, canals, railroad tracks, Russian Olive trees and the Pasco Farmer’s Market “says” Tri-Cities.

For Week No. 1 we’re doing Umatilla & Hermiston. What “says” Umatilla/Hermiston to you? What’s your favorite thing about these communities? What would you miss if you left? Fill in the blank: Hermiston/Umatilla would never be the same without ________________.

This is one of those life experiences that families all over the country are going thru with their kids, husbands, wives being deployed by the US Armed Forces to serve our country. My Daughter Brianna is in Afghanistan. She landed there a couple of weeks ago. She is adjusting well, making friends, trying the local food and meeting the locals.

We have care packages in route and when we know more about her needs we will get together a a bunch of personal items and send out a bunch of car packages to the soldiers serving over in Afghanistan.

The news that came to us that is a little hard to swallow was that our grandkids which have been staying with dad at Ft Lewis. Well as they say everything is subject to change. Her husband Will has been given orders to transfer to Ft Bliss Tx and then deploy to another region of Afghanistan. The US Army has already packed their house and moved it. The grandkids are coming to Tri-Cities to stay with grandma but here is where we need the help.

Will & Brianna need to find a foster home for Mele the family dog. We need somebody that can take care of her for about a year. Mele is a spayed female golden retreiver/chow mix. She is five years old and weights about 40lbs. Good family dog and loves the kids.

We can get help with food but now we need to help Mele find a temporary home until Will & Brianna come back from serving our country. probably going to be up to a year.

Do we really need a day to celebrate chocolate chips?  Why not celebrate every day!   My favorite way to eat chocolate chips is in cookies of course. Homemade or directly out of a box of Otis Spunkmeyer brand cookie dough available at Costco.  This box of 70 rarely makes it to the oven because I can’t resist cookie dough!  Do they have a 12 step program for cookie dough junkies?   I also like to mix chocolate chips with peanuts, on ice cream,  in pancakes, on top of a gourmet coffee, or just out of the bag.

I was in awe when I saw this. No man could ever copy what nature has already perfected. The ultimate fishing machine. A full grown adult Osprey. This is an amazing video of this Osprey plowing threw a school of fish by the river bank, a flounder on the river bed and even a BIG salmon that had to weigh more than the Osprey itself.

Beautiful to watch. Nature at it’s best. It is really special to see an eagle, a hawk or even an osprey fish along the Columbia River. During the winter months it is not uncommon to see these birds of prey in the Tri City area.
