Child development experts encourage parents to allow unstructured play. Too many ballet classes, basketball practices and piano recitals prevent children from developing their talents and personalities in a natural way. But should recess be treated differently?A school in Richland says children are getting too competitive with kick ball at recess. They've begun instituting structured, directed play on Mondays, and are considering expanding the program.

In short, unstructured play at an elementary school can be problematic. Small groups of kids have a great time. Large groups of kids occasionally bully one another, form cliques and exclude slower and less-athletic children. Since small-group recess is impractical, maybe unstructured play should be done away with.

I can see the child development experts rolling their eyes, but doesn't it make sense? What do you think?
