We're a couple of days into April and I gotta say: even though there's wind today I am pretty pleased with how we have been treated by it so far. Will the pleasant weather persist throughout the month? While I can't offer specific conditions for anything farther than a week away, let's take a look at some general stuff. Most of my data will be coming from the Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service.

Averages: I want to discuss averages briefly because I will be using that to compare to. In the beginning of April, the average high for the Tri-Cities is 64. That number rises to 72 by the end of the month. Average lows begin at 37 and top out at 41. In an average April, we can expect around 0.65 inches of rain. Detailed averages can be found here.

Temperature: The chart here shows how temperatures across the nation will compare to average for the month of April. The brownish red color indicates above average temperatures, and blue shades indicate below average. In the Pacific Northwest, we can anticipate above average temperatures most of the time. It is important to keep in mind, however, that this does not mean that every day will be above average because this is a general chart. There will likely be a few days blow average this month because that's just how it works.

Precipitation: This chart shows how rainfall for the month of April will compare to average. Brown areas indicate below average rainfall, with green being above. In Washington and northern Oregon, we can expect below average precipitation. This is not to say that we won't see any rain this month, just that we will be below that average of 0.6 inches.

Impacts: It is looking like we are seeing an early start to our dry season. Last year's drought is mostly gone at this point thanks to the weather this winter, so this isn't cause for concern. There is still snow pretty low in the passes, but I doubt we'll see many more snowstorms.

We might have a few more mornings at or slightly below 32, but chances are slim that we'll have another hard freeze. If you're looking to plant a garden, you might start your preparations now to do so.
