Weirdest Story of 2013 Nomination: Doc Reunites Man With Amputated Arm 50 Years Later

Flickr, planetc1

During the Vietnam War Houston surgeon Sam Axelrad amputated a man’s infected arm. What happened next is too weird to be made up:The doc’s friends boiled the flesh off the amputated arm and connected the bones into a skeleton arm like a science teacher might use. The friends gifted Axelrad the arm before returning home.

Likely thinking it was as weird as we do, he stuck it in a bag once he got home and threw the bag in a closet.

Fast forward 47 years. Axelrad found the bag and decided to travel to Vietnam to find the amputee and return the arm to its rightful owner.

With the help of a Vietnamese journalist, the two got the word out and were able to find Nguyen Quang Hung who now plans to be buried with his complete body.

By the way, our haunted house opens in September
