Mara Abbott, a Whitman graduate, received the honor to be a part of the US Olympic cycling team and headed to Rio. The Women's Cycling Road Race was a nail-biting fight to the finish. Through miles of pedaling, all kinds of obstacles including a terrible crash to swerve around, the gold medal was in sight.

But as she got closer to the end, her energy gave out, and she watched as first, second, and third speed past her. She missed the bronze medal by 4 seconds! 4th place in the world isn't too shabby, and even though she didn't medal, even getting to go to the Olympics is a BIG deal! We're proud of you, Mara! Way to go, lady!
