Parents in Washington State and the entire country are being fooled by a "virtual kidnapping" scam warn the FBI. They are contacted by someone claiming to have kidnapped their kid, have personal information only they would know, and demand them to pay a ransom to get them back according to news reports. In reality their kids are fine and the whole thing is a scary scam.

One parent, Wendy Mueller from North Carolina, got called from Mexico from someone that said they took her daughter "off the street" and that she needed to withdraw &10,000 to see her daughter again. The scammers gather information on social media and use it to fool their victims into thinking it is real. They make them wire the money right then before they hang up the phone. Wendy found out her daughter was safe later but lost all the money she wired to the scammer.
