The 2012 H1 Unlimited Hydroplane Season is just about ready to get under way! Our race will be coming here the last weekend in July 27-29th including the HAPO Over The River Airshow. CLICK HERE for a link to the Tri Cities Water Follies.

Our race has been going on since 1966 and this year will be another fantastic field with about 12 boats competing for The Columbia Cup!

2 teams will be in town this coming Friday May 17. Shaking down equipment. Degree Men Team and Peters & May Team with drivers Scott Liddycoat & JW Meyers getting their season together.

It was hot yesterday and that reminded me to find my swimsuit. Swimwear is a funny thing because has got to be the most personal thing we wear all year. As problematic as that is, we also love for our things to be personal, or rather extensions of our personality. When my wife can’t find something she really likes, she makes her own.  That got me thinking, if women can’t find a bathing suit they like, can they make their own? I discovered on YouTube that many have. Some even recycle old clothing like T-shirts and leggings! I’d be wary of using a T-shirt, however, since “wet T-shirt” is not a phrase usually used to market bathing suits. And sorry to be a wet blanket, but one of the DIY experts I found discouraged people from using old towels. It seems like an obvious choice, but apparently wearing a wet towel for hours is not at all comfortable. It also becomes heavy and sags. Check out these five creative and innovative ideas for making your own swimsuit:

Tamisha Glashen is not the best public speaker, but she’s easy to follow and has great ideas.

Here’s Tamisha again; similar style, but this one is a REALLY cool idea. She takes shiny leggings she doesn’t want anymore and uses the already-sewn portions to cut the sewing time in half! Leggings sometimes come in colors that go out of style, but anything goes as swimwear, right?

Here’s Tamisha AGAIN (come on, she’s got good ideas). In this one she tells you how to get a swimsuit pattern that will perfectly fit you without having to buy a real sewing pattern.

OK, here’s someone new. It’s all visual and the seamstress is moving a little too fast for my liking, but you get the idea. The music makes me feel like I’m at a weird European rave for DIY sewing fans. And the finished product does not appear to fit all that comfortably, but the end result is a more traditional bikini than what Tamisha was doing.

Here’s the T-shirt one. I think it’s very clever.

I was in awe when I saw this. No man could ever copy what nature has already perfected. The ultimate fishing machine. A full grown adult Osprey. This is an amazing video of this Osprey plowing threw a school of fish by the river bank, a flounder on the river bed and even a BIG salmon that had to weigh more than the Osprey itself.

Beautiful to watch. Nature at it’s best. It is really special to see an eagle, a hawk or even an osprey fish along the Columbia River. During the winter months it is not uncommon to see these birds of prey in the Tri City area.

What happens when you mix about 500 elementary school kids and country music. Let me tell you it’s kind of like herding cats. But you throw in some organization and some colored cones and it all comes together for the 2nd annual William Wiley Elementary Jog A Thon!

This is a great fundraiser for the kids and they get some exercise. It was my pleasure to come out and crank up some country music and have some fun with these kids!

You crank up the radio when your favorite new song comes on and man you just start wailin’! You are satisfying your inner rock star! Even you can’t carry a tune you will still sing along with the radio. I know when I have the tunes cranked up and I’m taking a cruise thru Columbia park I will even let a couple of off key notes fly.

An Australian woman Jolene Van Vugt a stunt woman has set the land speed record for a motorized toilet. She hit a top speed of 46 mph. No idea if she was using a “Bio Fuel” or if she could have gone faster if she had more “gas”. Oh well.

On her new album ‘Blown Away,’ Carrie Underwood spends time looking backward at relationships that have run their course. The mid-tempo, mandolin driven ‘Do You Think About Me’ is a nostalgic remembrance of a boyfriend that she no longer pines for, but certainly thinks about.

“You don’t wish you were with that person anymore, it’s not about that, at all,” Underwood says in a the video below. “But sometimes you just wonder what they’re up to, you know? You wonder, ‘Are they happy?’” The ‘Good Girl’ singer didn’t write the song in question, and she doesn’t explain which of her past flames she catches herself thinking about from time to time.

The light and happy song was written by Cary Barlowe, Hillary Lindsey and Shane Stevens. “That first cold September night / You were the blanket holding me tight / You were kissing me and the air stood still / You said we don’t have to I said I will,” Underwood sings to begin the song.

The chorus is catchy and happy, mostly. Or as Underwood admits, “It might be a tad bittersweet.”

“Oh I, Oh I’m not even trying / Oh I, Oh I, but I can’t stop smiling / Do you think about me / Like I think about you / Do you think about me / Like I think about you.”

At PS22 in Staten Island, N.Y., a chorus of talented fifth graders has garnered some national attention by performing hit songs with famous musicians like Gym Class Heroes, Ingrid Michaelson, Adele… and now, country’s own gem Carrie Underwood. Led by their instructor, talented piano player Gregg Breinberg, a few dozen chorus members gathered in the school auditorium recently to sing ‘Good Girl’ with Underwood, whose typically larger-than-life voice was almost overpowered by the kids’ skills.

In the goosebump-inducing performance, one of the fifth grade students pounded on the drums, while Breinberg played the keys and the country songstress shared vocals with a really lucky young guy. The boy, who looks to be about 11 years old, had no trouble hanging with Underwood. In fact, he was so talented in his performance that she had some kind words to say about him and his fellow classmates at the song’s end.

“I think myself and everyone else in the music industry right now needs to be worried, because they’re getting older, and so you guys are going to put us all out of a job!” she said during a video interview after the performance.

The ‘Good Girl’ singer also had kind words to say about the choir instructor.

“I feel like I’m a part of the choir now, and my experience at PS22 has been amazing,” she told him. “I would like to thank all of you guys for having me here and singing my songs, and making them sound better than I ever could! It just made my heart happy to be here. I would have loved to have been a part of your choir way back when.”

Of course, PS22 was delighted to share the stage with Underwood for the day. They even presented her with her own adult-sized chorus T-shirt, and she said she would wear it proudly. Our description of these talented fifth-graders just doesn’t do them justice. You’ll have to watch the video to see for yourself!
