Thanks to the vikings' brilliant idea to fuse glass with rocks to reinforce the structural integrity of a tower that lasted more 1,500 years (and is still standing), VIT plant advocates have more confidence.

Hanford cleanup contractors are working on a VIT (vitrification) plant -- with the help of PNNL experts -- to turn the nuclear waste in Hanford's tanks into glass bricks to be stored in a secure location.

Read how the vikings used vitrification to build a stable wall that has resisted erosion for over 1,000 years! That means the radioactive bricks could very well be just as durable and safely store the waste for thousands of years.
