Kennewick police are investigating what they call an “unusual” amount of thefts over a 30 day span.

After not recording a single Harley Davidson motorcycle theft in all of 2012,  police say three of the prized cycles have been taken in just a few weeks.

*A black and red 1983 Harley with “ape-hanger” handlebars was stolen from 1205 West 1st. Avenue.  It had been stored in a shed.  The owner said it was not in operating condition and not drivable, but was taken sometime in the last couple of weeks.

*A black Harley Dhyna Low-Rider was stolen from 437 South Anderson during overnight hours.  The owner said the bike was parked on a patio in the backyard, and was specialized and didn’t need a key to start it.  This bike was recovered Tuesday by Benton County Sheriffs in the Snake River near the Two Rivers boat launch, but the bike had been stripped of all it’s parts with only the frame remaining.

*A candy apple red 2012 Harley Sportster Model XL1200 was taken recently from 6825 West Kennewick Ave. #5.  The owner said the vehicle was parked and locked, and since it weighed over 700 lbs, it would have had to be carried from the location by more than one person.   It had been parked outside the victim’s apartment.

Especially because of the time proximity of the thefts, and the cycle that would have required multiple people to move it, police are considering there may be more than one suspect involved, but did not say if they believe it’s a theft ring.   Kennewick police urge anyone with a Harley or other cycle to securely store it inside a garage or shed if possible.

Anyone with information leading to arrests or apprehension of suspects is urged to call Tri-Cities Crime Stoppers at 509-586-TIPS (8477).
