Today marks 70 years since the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan on Dec. 7, 1941, which killed 2,402 Americans and wounded more than half as many, effectively starting World War II. People worldwide are undoubtedly taking time out of their day to think about the devastating attack that changed everything, country music stars included.

Billy Ray Cyrus reached out to his 700,000 Twitter followers on Wednesday to say simply, “National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day 70th Anniversary. SOME GAVE ALL,” reminding his fans to think about those lost in the war.

Rascal Flatts‘ Jay DeMarcus also recognized the significance of the date with a public message, though he put a patriotic spin on the day, which will forever carry lasting sad effects. The ‘Easy’ singer tweeted, “Remember Pearl Harbor today… That day changed our country forever. I’m so very proud to be an American….”

On National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day, which is an annual event, it is traditional to fly your American flag at half-staff until sunset as a means to pay your respects to the service men and women lost on that fateful day.
