One of the oldest grave stones in Washington state belong to a young man who was pickled before burial. His family was Prussian (a country that used to be in northern Germany) and his family moved to America for religious freedom.

They decided to trek across the country along the Oregon Trail and settle in Washington. The leader’s son was so excited to go he asked to be in the lead wagon.

But then he died!

His father lined a coffin with lead, then filled it with BOOZE and put his son inside to preserve his body until they reached Washington. The family dressed all in black and hauled that heavy thing all the way.

Native Americans were totally freaked out by the group and left them alone. They eventually reached the coast and buried the boy. Not long after they all moved to the Aurora, Oregon.

The stone is in a private cemetery so you can’t visit it, but the pickled man is a local celebrity.
