When is too little fat unhealthy?  On average a man’s body fat is 13 to 20 percent. Part of that fat is regarded as essential fat (3%).  Essential fat is what the body needs to maintain good health. Too little fat is considered unhealthy. For example, if you compete in physique competitions, falling below 5% body fat for the competition is acceptable as you prepare and compete, but don’t stay in that range. Here're just a few of the things that could go wrong if you drop below 5% body fat.

Low energy, heart problems and low heart rate which will make you dizzy, you get cold easily, athletic performance suffers, constant hunger, slower recovery time after workouts, low testosterone, more susceptible to illness and colds, and could cause irritability.

I recently measured my body fat at 5.8%.  Somehow I dropped from 8.7%, which is where I usual hover. I can eat just about anything and not gain weight. So for me, I have to make sure I get enough calories in. I know...it's a great problem to have and my wife hates me for it.
