I occasionally call women "ma'am" and there are a few who don't like it. I sincerely try to be friends with all and get along with everybody, but if you get offended by the title "ma'am" you can just shut up.First off, I'm not going to defend it as polite because, to be honest, when I call people ma'am I'm usually being sassy. I don't call every female "ma'am" all the time. It's just whenever I feel like it, and when I do I'm usually in a silly, playful mood. So understand that I'm not defending my right to be chivalrous.

I'm just making fun of women who for whatever reason can't handle being called a term of respect. Is it because it's sexist? Is it because it makes them feel old? Who cares? Regardless of the motive, the word "ma'am" is one of respect.

One time I was so annoyed with a woman I lied to her to avoid a confrontation.

Her: "Greg, can you show me where that cord is kept?"

Me: "Yes ma'am."

Her: "What did you call me? Did you call me ma'am?"

Me: "Sorry, I'm from the South. It's how we're raised. It's meant to be polite."
