According to Home improvement web's Authors Website, Henry's Housework: Ice dams are caused by poor ventilation in attics causing warm areas of roofs where snow melts and is trapped by the ice at the bottom edge of the roof and then re-freezes, exacerbating the problem. Using a ladder to clear snow and ice from the roof will help. Creating a channel through the ice to drain water will help. Be cautious about damaging the roof while removing ice. Tossing ice melt on the roof and keeping it clear of snow will go a long way. The ice in the gutter is not a major concern.

This all good advice, But is there anything I can DIY? buy on-line?... I'm on a Budget!!

It wouldn't hurt to throw some ice melt on the ice dam, create some kind of run off for the melting snow.
