Growing an Avocado – Why Did We Do This?

Do you remember doing this as a kid? I did it a number of times, and if I remember correctly, it would begin to grow a green plant from the seed. But, I never remember us ever getting a full fledged plant from it and never an avocado bush!

Seems every time we ate an avocado we just put toothpicks in the seed and put it in a cup. Weeks later when it was all moldy and everyone forgot to add water...we'd throw it out and next time someone had an avocado the whole process would begin again.

I'm not sure WHY!! Kinda funny I guess and a little weird. I'm curious...Did any of you do that too? Maybe it was just our family.
