Plot: Catherine is worn out and exhausted from taking care of her father after years of his devastating mental illness. Once a brilliant mathematician, Robert struggles with common, ordinary living. Catherine’s sister, Claire, enters the picture and old family antagonisms arise. Hal, Robert’s former student, attempts to review his mentor’s insane writings. The possible specter of Catherine’s mental state is laid bare in the playing out of old family stories and jealousies.

The language of the play is harsh at times, but arises from the anxiety of what is feared and what is past. David Auburn has created an honest play that examines the internal dynamics of a difficult family situation.

Mature language and themes.
