Authorities cleaned out a popular transient camp last Thursday along the Umatilla River.

The county sheriff's office was aware of the illegal squatting, but complaints from people living in the area didn't start until late August. Six people known to be regulars in the tent camp were found and a few were arrested on old warrants.

As the winter chills moved in, the residents of the camp moved out, leaving their garbage and trailer behind. The debris filled the dumpster they brought to clear out the area. The staff in charge of the disposal of the trash reported that it weighed 4,280 pounds. That's a lot of stuff!

Deputies expect more tent cities will pop up this spring.
