Cincinnati Reds Pitcher Hit in Face by Line Drive [VIDEO]

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapmin was hit in the face with a ball off a line drive during a spring training game between the Reds and Royals yesterday.  The video and photo within this post are not for all eyes.  WARNING! Arolidis was taken off the field by stretcher. Reds player Todd Frazier tweeted “prayers for my man Chapmin. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. Still in shock”.

The photo is of my son, who took a line drive to the face a few years ago.  He broke his eye socket and nose and underwent nose reconstruction surgery.  Doctors said an inch to the right and he might have been killed.  As horrific as it was he healed up and is now playing college ball.

Ironically, the year after my son was struck by the pitch, high school and college outlawed composite bats and went strictly to BBCOR (Batted Ball Coefficient of Restitution) bats. There are fewer injuries to pitchers and yes – fewer home runs. The standard regulates how much energy is lost during the bat’s contact with the baseball.  Read more here.
