"Car Talk" -- National Public Radio's most popular program for decades -- was hosted by brothers Tom and Ray. Tom Magliozzi died Monday from Alzheimer's disease complications. He was 77.

Together Tom and Ray were "Click and Clack the Tappet Brothers." Born 12 years a part, the brothers were both professors. Cambridge natives, they each graduated from MIT and were engineers.

Tom quit to teach at Harvard for a while, and earned a PhD in marketing. Together they opened a couple of auto shops (frequently referred to on the show).

They got into radio by accident. The local NPR station asked them to be on a panel of experts answering car questions and the staff and audience loved them. A weekly show soon followed.
