"Mad Max: Fury Road" looked really stupid, and is the best-reviewed movies in years. Critics and audiences alike LOVE it! That got me thinking about other movies that looked dumb, but are in fact awesome:

Edge of Tomorrow

Even though it has Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt in it, the trailers looked dumb and low budget. It's neither and the acting is great.

Hot Rod

Comedies seem to be getting dumber and dumber, and this one seems to be targeting middle school kids, but I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe -- over and over again.

In Bruges

Colin Farrell is a hit man encountering some bad luck in a boring town. Colin Farrell fans say he's at his best.

Donnie Darko

This is not a film for everybody, but it's definitely a "cult classic." You owe it to yourself to see if you love it.

John Wick

Let's face it, it takes courage to see a Keanu Reeves film anymore, but people who braved this flick were not disappointed. It's being called the best action film in years.

Whiplash

It looked like a sappy teacher-inspiration movie, but it is so far from it. The Oscar nominations say enough.

Primer

This film was made with $7,000. Not a typo. $7k. That's it. And one scene is ridiculously bad but they didn't have the money to reshoot it. But you won't believe what $7,000 and a fantastic script can accomplish.
