A recent survey asked people from other countries what surprised them most about America. The answers will nearly make you cry. USA! USA! USA!

  • The toothpaste aisle. There is an aisle for toothpaste. It's been almost 25 years, and that still boggles my mind.
  • How well lit everything was, it was like looking at Christmas lights.
  • The smell of Burger King.
  • Yellow mustangs.
  • Everyone is on time.
  • Passengers on trains have little to no instructions and mayhem doesn't break lose.
  • Being able to find a ride online from a stranger and not be murdered along the way.
  • Everyone respects convention.
  • Police allowing (even protecting) people with offensive ideas holding rallies or parades.
  • Riding public transportation with valuables and not fearing a mugging.
  • Being able to walk around with your smart phone in your hand and not be afraid of being robbed.
  • Air conditioning everywhere.
  • Vehicles stopping for pedestrians. "The driver makes a little hand motion thingy and I'm standing there thinking do you want me to go? Do you want to go first? What is this? Is this protocol? Is this what is done here? You wait for me? I as a pedestrian have rights and not a bulls eye on my face?"
  • You can go to libraries and borrow books for free without paying anything.
  • The size of everything: "I was picked up from the airport in a Ford Expedition, which was about the size of my house back in Cuba, and then taken to a six bedroom house. I remember I used to feel uncomfortable in the big rooms, so I would hang out in closets and what not at first."
  • The bread aisle: "Mom had to wait in line for bread, for 2hrs. 2 hrs for bread. When it was her time to turn in her food stamps, sometimes it ran out. She comes here, and there are aisles of bread, rows and rows. White, whole-wheat, multi grain, 12 grain, 18 grain! Flax, Ancient grain, hotdog buns, hamburger buns, artisan breads, sun dried tomatoe, garlic bread, cheese buns, cheese bread... It blew her mind."
  • How many different snack varieties.
  • Vehicles stop for traffic lights.
  • How clean everything is.
  • How much food gets served and/or thrown away.
